Bliss er tólf klukkustunda langt myndbandsverk af sviðsetningu á lokaaríu Brúðkaups Fígarós. Verkið er ein samfelld taka af gjörningi listamannsins sem hann flutti ásamt óperusöngvurum og hljómsveit. Sýningin verður frumsýning á þessu nýja verki Ragnars Kjartanssonar.

Listamaðurinn Ragnar Kjartansson flutti ásamt stórum hópi listamanna tólf klukkustunda langan óperugjörning á myndlistartvíæringnum Performa 11 í New York í fyrra. Bliss hlaut Malcolm McLaren verðlaunin í kjölfar flutningsins og veitti Ragnar þeim viðtöku úr hendi tónlistarmannsins Lou Reed. Samnefnt myndbandsverk, sem er upptaka af gjörningnum, verður sýnt í fullri lengd á tjaldi á Stóra sviði Þjóðleikhússins og geta gestir komið og farið að vild á meðan á sýningunni stendur.

Í verkinu Bliss er lokaarían úr Brúðkaupi Fígarós eftir Mozart endurtekin í sífellu. Arían, sem er innan við þrjár mínútur, var flutt viðstöðulaust í tólf tíma með leikmynd og búningum í rokokkóstíl. Þátttakendur í verkinu, auk Ragnars, eru tíu íslenskir óperusöngvarar og hljómsveit. Davíð Þór Jónsson útsetti og sá um tónlistarstjórn. Kristján Jóhannsson óperusöngvari söng hlutverk greifans og nemendur hans fóru með önnur hlutverk. Gjörningurinn Bliss er í fimmta sæti yfir menningarviðburði ársins hjá bandaríska tímaritinu New York Entertainment.

Um listamanninn

Ragnar Kjartansson er fæddur árið 1976 og útskrifaðist úr Listaháskóla Íslands árið 2001. Hann hefur haldið margar einkasýningar og tekið þátt í fjölda samsýninga víða um heim. Í myndlist sinni blandar Ragnar saman myndlist, tónlist og leikhúsi en hann hefur fengist við ýmsa miðla s.s. myndbönd, innsetningar, skúlptúr og málverk. Í verkum hans er einkennandi samspilið á milli andstæðra tilfinninga s.s. sorgar og hamingju, hryllings og fegurðar, alvarleika og húmors. Ragnar sýndi fyrir Íslands hönd á Myndlistartvíæringnum í Feneyjum árið 2009.

Bliss is a twelve-hour long video of the staging of the final aria of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. In a single shot the artist performs along with opera singers, full orchestra, scenery, and rococco costume. The screening will be the premiere of this new piece by Ragnar Kjartansson.

Artist Ragnar Kjartansson presented a twelve-hour long performance at Performa 11 in New York in November last year. The performance, entitled Bliss, repeated the delirious final aria of Mozart’s 1786 opera The Marriage of Figaro and received the biennial’s Malcolm McLaren Award.

A new work by the same title, recoding the full length performance, will be screened on the Main Stage of the National Theatre of Iceland on 21st May. During the 12 hours screening the audience is welcome to wander in and out.

In the final act of the opera, the Count asks the Countess' forgiveness for his arrogant blunders, which she grants, inspiring the entire court to celebrate. Kjartansson’s work replicates the lavishness of traditional opera with a full orchestra, elaborate scenery, and period costumes, and features renowned Icelandic tenor Kristján Jóhannsson and a group of Icelandic opera singers, as well as the artist himself, continuously replaying the two-minute musical, visual, and narrative pinnacle of the opera, approaching a euphoric state for performers and listeners alike. Arrangements and orchestration was conducted by Davíð Þór Jónsson.
